    he actually portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as
he revealed that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker
Nolan about portraying Joker over a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for
a number of reasons. I wasn’t ready then.

‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: « Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film. »‘

Joker: Folie À Deux heading to streaming after box office flop

In 2020, Joaquin earned the Best Lead Actor Oscar for Todd Phillips directed Joker which

Joaquin continued: ‘I don’t know whether Christopher Nolan was

‘I can’t remember the context of how we met. But I know that we met, and my feeling was,
    « I shouldn’t do this. » But maybe he also was like, « You’re not the guy. » I couldn’t say.’

The Dark Knight actor died aged 28 after
taking a fatal cocktail of drugs, leaving behind his daughter,
who was two years old at the time.

Meanwhile Joker: Folie À Deux can now be streamed, just weeks after its theatrical
    release.

The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is now available to rent from home starting October
29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros. investment into the film, as per Variety.

The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose at least
$150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to the publication.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film
and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the
    report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut
taken by theaters — though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous « insiders » or « rival executives » are grossly wrong and continues
a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to
earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically
and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and
$248.4 million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar
Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book
movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized
as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday,
    October 4.

had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took
on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley
    Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic
    book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this
year and also received terrible reviews — holds
    a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds
an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical
and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with
director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with
DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and
Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere
    afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city,
it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include
    a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the
Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due
    to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
    movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged
in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around
    20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The
one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re
going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix
at the LA premiere September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to
Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the
fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio
‘fully supported the decision to bring the
    film to Venice.

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

  85. July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its
heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for the heated tobacco business.

The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.

The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.

Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its
portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid
stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.

The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who
have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past regulatory
    decisions, Reuters reported last week.

The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects
by the second half of 2025.

A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already
hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying the impact
from the ban was « slightly greater » than previously assumed.

This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated
tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.

However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and
raised its annual sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as higher cigarette pricing.

has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley
Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its
October 4 release and flopped at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film
has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’
    while filming.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said:
‘It’s the worst film ever made.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh,
this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of
people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage!
    Nihilism! All these think pieces.

Folie à Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’
and ‘the worst film ever made’

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur
Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to
    a point where it’s insane.’

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham
Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This
is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever
    seen.’

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
    That’s how terrible it is.’

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to
social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’
    2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels
to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media
after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’
    2019 motion picture

One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting and creative than anything
marvel has done in years is expected.’

It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood
of negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team
now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from the
furore over the film, insiders claim.

Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box
office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for
her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a
role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked
that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects
they can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as
    possible.’

the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker:
Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects
to help distract from the furor over the film, insiders claim

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a
second source claimed she is not letting it deter her from returning to the
big screen, with the singer said to be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first
film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final film.
Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants
    to audition.

‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is
presented, it is a bucket list moment for her to
    be involved.’

I will bookmark your blog and check again here frequently.
I am slightly certain I’ll be told many new stuff right
here! Good luck for the next!

  91. Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is
at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments
against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to
    come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to
prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at
an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who
makes political donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity
while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency
that disclosures of donations need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out
the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much
greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning
    by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it
serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right)
said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party,
as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will
need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate
    will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed
new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not
    a reform’.

They have lost their collective minds after finding out
that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support
    of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before
even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these
important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the
virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer
    to accountability.

    More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide.

Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls
to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes
à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the
wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running
a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political
    donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the
    crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time
to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the
Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the
laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the
proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being
    advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that
could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

and Joker was brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that is
    key to that duo.’

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the
industry wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to
an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative team
go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for
a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a
fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the
movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter
nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with
    Lady Gaga joining the franchise

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival,
where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute
    standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from
63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps
even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket
buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D
CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better.
It got a meager half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior
media analyst for Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to
produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot,
which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic
total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and
Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from
just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start
is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of
    the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to
make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.
The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur
Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and
dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called  »Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans
of the first movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle
finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.

‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the
theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started
with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of
person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was
about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this
summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.

and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures
    will be released Monday.

Joker: Folie À Deux heading to streaming after box office flop

In 2020, Joaquin earned the Best Lead Actor Oscar for Todd Phillips directed Joker which was 11 years after Ledger posthumously earned Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight in 2009.

Joaquin continued: ‘I don’t know whether Christopher Nolan was coming to me saying, « You are definitely the person. »

‘I can’t remember the context of how we met. But I know that we met, and my feeling was,
    « I shouldn’t do this. » But maybe he also was like, « You’re not the guy. » I couldn’t say.’

Heath died in a New York City apartment on January 22, 2008, after accidentally overdosing following months of physical and mental exhaustion.

The Dark Knight actor died aged 28 after taking a fatal cocktail of drugs, leaving behind his daughter, who was two
    years old at the time.

Meanwhile Joker: Folie À Deux can now be streamed, just weeks after its theatrical release.

The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is now available to rent from home starting October
29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros. investment into the

Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film
and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying
‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous « insiders » or
« rival executives » are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s
opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its
    home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has
grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks
    of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4.

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar
for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for
    a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier
this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with
    a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score
    of 32%.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent
familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter
Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film
does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.

Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with
DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2
    in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but
Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told
a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
    movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips
shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and
was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price
    point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost
    around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations
are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA
    premiere September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film
    in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t
listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but
Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve
    Coogan.

  96. Des électeurs attendent l’ouverture d’un bureau
de vote à Windhoek, le 29 novembre 2024 en Namibie

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election, set to test
the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.

Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where
Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a « sham » by
    the opposition.

Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative
polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO)
party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used
to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.

In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and mobile voting teams
had left areas with voters still in the queues, it said.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended
the vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to
    vote.

In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to
reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who
    arrived at 4:30 am.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

Des électeurs attendent l’ouverture d’un bureau de vote à Windhoek, le 29 novembre 2024 en Namibie

« Everyone will have the chance to vote, » he said.
But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried
« everyone will flock to one place again. »

The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.

Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a
joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus who represents the Independent Patriots
    for Change (IPC) party.

Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of
a generation born after independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.

Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the
first woman to lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.

« To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd, » said voter Ensley
Engermund, who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite trying four different polling stations.

« Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos? » asked the 49-year-old security agent.

« It was to get people frustrated. »

  107. SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and
the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its
policy path. The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late
session close at 7.066. Prior to the market opening, the
People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed
to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only
3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday
failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month,
due to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for
    the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for
an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news,
said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.

« Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge, » the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional
stimulus measures that could help further lift China
asset sentiment. Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to what

  111. Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International
on Thursday said it would be filing a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) in the United States for its IQOS ILUMA product in October.

The company at its investor day said that while the PMTA timeline remains « hard to predict », it expects the launch of the ILUMA heated
tobacco units towards the second half of its three-year forecast period of 2024 to 2026.

IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them,
a process the company says potentially results in fewer health risks than traditional smoking

    public health.

LONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International has registered new lobbyists in at least 19 U.S.
states this year, and plans to add some in four
more in the next two weeks, according to a Reuters’ review of public records and information provided by the company.

The world’s biggest cigarette maker by market value is expanding its lobbying firepower as it gears up to launch its flagship IQOS heated tobacco device in a long-awaited entry to the United States, where vaping is already
    an established alternative to smoking.

State-level lobbying registers examined by Reuters showed that in at least three states – Georgia, Colorado and Oregon – disclosures specified that the lobbying activity would focus on heated
    tobacco products.

Elsewhere, the filings referenced broader topics including tobacco policy, taxation and business, and commerce.

IQOS heats up packets of ground tobacco but does not burn them, a process
the company says potentially results in fewer health risks than traditional smoking.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorised
PMI to market IQOS as offering reduced exposure to harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes.

PMI was spun off from U.S. cigarette giant Altria in 2008.
It had not sold any products in the United States until the
purchase of oral nicotine company Swedish Match in 2022.
As a result, until this year its U.S. lobbying had been negligible.

PMI is trying to transform its image from a purveyor of cigarettes to a driving force behind the switch to healthier alternatives.

The company poured most of its $10.7 billion investment in what the industry
refers to as « reduced risk » products between 2008 and 2022 into the development of IQOS.

IQOS’ success in United States could be significant because
of the market’s size, said Sean King, research analyst at Colombia Threadneedle Investments,
a top 20 PMI investor. He said the U.S. non-combustible industry
accounts for a little over half of the global market.

PMI believes IQOS can win a 10% share of U.S. tobacco and heated tobacco unit
    volume by 2030.

Investors are closely watching which states PMI
will select to launch IQOS first. Any it chooses will likely to be the focus of PMI’s strategy for years to come, given its slow and steady approach in other countries of launching
IQOS in major cities and then building out from there.

« It’s going to be a multi-year process within some of these states… before they progress toward a national launch, » King
    said.

Corey Henry, PMI’s director of U.S. communications, said the company is expanding its government affairs capability across the
U.S. as part of the normal course of business. PMI’s lobbying
could relate to its Swedish Match business
or more general engagement around smoking
    rates, Henry said.

PMI also plans to add lobbying capacity in four more states within the next two weeks, he said, meaning its overall lobbying efforts span states where
the vast majority of smokers – and the U.S. population – reside.

« Viewing PMI’s work across all regions of the U.S. strictly through the lens of potential launch geographies for our electrically heated tobacco system is incorrect, » he said.

The publicly available lobbying registries showed that PMI has hired more
than a dozen firms or individuals, some with high-level connections
in legislatures including in Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

The high-level lobbyists include Park Strategies LLC in New York,
a firm founded by former U.S. Senator Alfonse M.
D’Amato, as well as Daniel Hodge, former chief of staff to Governor Greg Abbott in Texas.

Park Strategies and Hodge did not respond to requests
    for comment.

    COMPETITIVE MARKET

Euromonitor International, a London-based market research company, valued U.S.
nicotine sales, excluding nicotine replacement therapies, at some $143.6 billion last year.

While cigarettes accounted for the vast majority of that, Euromonitor forecasts their value will shrink by 30%
by 2027. The value of vapes, heated tobacco products and other alternatives will rise by 36% over the same period,
    it says.

Some rival heated tobacco products have struggled in the
U.S. market, where vaping and other alternatives are already well established.

After initially test launching a heated tobacco product in the United States, British
American Tobacco said it would instead focus its efforts
    on these more established categories.

Gaurav Jain, a director of equity research at Barclays, said PMI has to prove IQOS
will work in the United States after it struggled in other markets with similar
    dynamics.

« It will be a much more competitive market, » he said.

PMI’s Henry said the company estimates 19.4 million adults around the world have switched
to IQOS and stopped smoking, and it is confident it can replicate its international success
    in the United States.

PMI is likely weighing a variety of factors – including
smoking rates, openness to innovation and income levels – as it selects states for IQOS’ launch,
according to Brett Cooper, managing partner and analyst
at Consumer Edge, an equity research firm.

IQOS has a relatively high cost compared to vapes or oral tobacco, which could put off some price-sensitive consumers.
For instance, the device costs between 39 pounds ($47.38) and 109 pounds in the
United Kingdom, according to its website.

Users must also repeatedly buy the tobacco packets, which resemble small cigarettes, for it to heat.

But it will appeal to those looking for a more similar experience
to smoking, especially if PMI can make it relatively cheap
compared to heavily taxed cigarettes, Cooper said.

IQOS has a key advantage in that regard: the device and
accompanying tobacco sticks are among only a handful of products to have been awarded « modified risk tobacco product » (MRTP) status from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration, alongside some oral tobacco products
    and some low-nicotine cigarettes.

In some states like Colorado and Washington – where PMI registered lobbyists in February, March and September – products with an MRTP designation are already taxed at a lower rate than traditional cigarettes.

The FDA has sought to crack down on flavoured vapes, in particular, amid concerns around youth usage.
Disposable vapes, often in sweet flavours, rapidly
came to account for a significant portion of U.S. e-cigarette
    sales. ($1 = 0.8232 pounds)

JAKARTA/LOS ANGELES, Nov 13 (Reuters) – Juul Labs Inc is exploring selling its compact vaping devices in Asia and has sounded out government officials in Indonesia, one of the world’s most smoker-friendly countries, although gaining approval there could face significant hurdles.

Expansion into Asia would provide the fast-growing firm with new markets
at a time when it faces increased regulatory scrutiny in the United States and Israel over the potential health risks of its products’ high nicotine content.

Juul representatives held discussions with the Indonesian government
last month about introducing its vaping devices, the country’s finance
    ministry officials told Reuters.

Indonesia has one of the world’s highest rates of
smoking among adults and teenage boys and imposes no penalties for selling cigarettes to minors.
It also has a population of 260 million, making it a highly attractive market for tobacco
    and vaping firms.

A person familiar with Juul’s plans said executives for the San Francisco-based company are concerned authorities may be reluctant to grant approval due to likely opposition from the traditional
tobacco industry, which provides much of Indonesia’s tax revenue.

Tobacco taxes accounted for nearly 150 trillion rupiah ($10.2 billion) or about 11 percent of national tax revenue in 2017,
government data showed. Each province also imposes taxes on cigarettes.

Juul is also worried its argument that vaping is healthier than smoking
will not hold much sway in Indonesia, which is not as concerned as
other countries about health issues, said the person, declining to be identified as the
    discussions were not public.

Juul representatives reached out to the finance ministry to discuss
how it would be taxed on any sales of devices there, the
    Indonesian officials said.

The government needs to examine the domestic e-cigarette market to determine
how a foreign player such as Juul could hurt local small and
    labour-intensive e-cigarette firms, said Sunaryo,
a senior official in Indonesia’s customs and excise office, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

« We will need it to study it, » he said, adding he
wasn’t sure Juul would comply with a regulation that requires e-cigarette devices and
    liquids to be sold separately.

Juul also would need approval from Indonesia’s Food and Drug Agency.
Officials at the agency said Juul had yet to be in touch.

Other Asian countries the three-year old firm is
actively considering for expansion include India, South
Korea and the Philippines, the person familiar with Juul’s
    plans said.

In addition to Indonesia, Juul filed trademark applications
for those countries between April and October 2018, as well as in Malaysia and Singapore, according to a Reuters review of government filings.
It opened its first Asia office in Singapore in July.

So far Juul, currently valued at $16 billion, is available only in the United States, Canada, the UK and Israel.
It has plans to enter Russia later this year.

Juul said in a statement to Reuters it is « proactively learning more » and engaging with local officials in Asia « to understand and hear their views. » It does not have immediate plans to launch
in any Asian country, it said. Juul spokeswoman Victoria Davis declined to elaborate.

    A TAXING QUESTION

Indonesia is one of only a handful of United Nations member states that has not signed on to the World Health
Organization’s global treaty that sets standards for tobacco control.

Roughly two-thirds of Indonesian men smoke tobacco daily, and more than 21 percent of
boys aged 13-15 smoked cigarettes regularly, according to a WHO report last year.

E-cigarettes, available in Indonesia since at least 2013,
are a small but growing market. The customs office estimated there are about
300 unsupervised liquid makers known as brewers in Indonesia, producing various liquid products to more than 4,000 vape stores and 900,000 smokers.

Philip Morris International Inc, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, which now controls about a third of Indonesia’s market through
its stake in Sampoerna, does not offer any of its non-combustible cigarette products in Indonesia.

That includes its IQOS device, a heat-not-burn tobacco product, according to
a company spokesman, who declined to comment on why it has not introduced the product.

In October, the government imposed a 57 percent tax on electronic-cigarette liquids,
on par with taxes on traditional cigarettes. But tax collection, particularly from smaller companies, is difficult in Indonesia and new rules are often ignored.

Juul now commands nearly 75 percent of U.S.
e-cigarette market share, up from 13.6 percent in early 2017,
according to a Wells Fargo analysis of Nielsen retail data.

Its products, like most electronic cigarettes, vaporize a liquid
containing nicotine. One Juul pod contains as much nicotine as a traditional pack of 20 cigarettes, according to the company’s U.S.
    marketing.

Juul liquid in the U.S. has a nicotine concentration of 59 milligrams per milliliter,
much higher than the liquids typically sold in earlier versions
of e-cigarettes and nearly three times the allowable limit in the European Union.

In August, Israel banned Juul devices with nicotine concentration of more than 20 mg/mL,
citing « a grave risk to public health. » Juul is appealing that decision and currently offers a lower nicotine-strength electronic cigarette in Israel.

In September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration opened an investigation into Juul and other electronic cigarette companies, citing the rising number of
teens who appear to be using Juul and other vaping devices.
This week it is expected to issue a ban on fruit and candy-flavoured e-cigarettes sold in convenience stores and gas stations.

In its statement to Reuters, Juul said its products are intended for adult
use only, and that it aims to « improve the lives of the world’s one billion adult smokers » by providing an alternative to cigarettes.

working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory
and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia
in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette
products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well
as related investment of $150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and
decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.

Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local third party,
joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country. (Reporting by

  121. A photo of two tourists wearing swimming bottoms in Thailand has outraged locals who urged visitors to respect their local culture.

The picture of two men in leopard print Budgy Smuggler-branded
swimmers at Phuket Airport went viral on Thai social media this week.

‘If you want mass tourism, not everyone will toe
the cultural line unfortunately,’ one disapproving commenter said.

The two men were seen loading up trolleys with bags
in the image, shot at Phuket Airport

Although the men’s nationality is not known, they were wearing the popular  Australian ‘Budgy Smugglers’ brand

‘Quite simple really, if you can’t respect the country’s culture,
tradition and laws – don’t visit,’ a second person wrote.

‘I don’t know a country in the world where this
    would be acceptable,’ another said.

‘I’d have a hard time believing that this is the normal culture anywhere,’ wrote a fourth.

Some locals didn’t have an issue with the men’s attire, saying tourists add to
    the Thai economy.

‘Welcome to Thailand! Do everything if you want! Just don’t make other people have problems.
You come to relax we know, this is our country’s business,
    ‘ one wrote.

There was also confusion if the men had just arrived in the country
ready to hit the beach or if they were preparing to check-in to their flights.

‘Pants are required at the airport,’ one wrote.

‘Some people like to get the very last minute of sun shine.
    Lol,’ another added.

‘They are excited and ready to swim,’ one said.

Thailand has a rich cultural heritage which locals argued needs to be respected

Although the men’s nationality is not known, some guessed there was a ‘100 per
    cent’ chance they were Australian.

The south-east Asian tourist destination of Bali separately
announced a crackdown on misbehaving tourists recently.

Balinese authorities assembled a taskforce in late
    2023 to ensure tourists behave.

Travellers are also issued a card of ‘do’s’ and ‘dont’s’ when they arrive at Denpasar airport to make tourists aware of local laws and traditions.

Indonesia kicked over 200 international tourists out of Bali last year,
including at least a dozen Australians.

  122. Howdy! I realize this is somewhat off-topic but I had to ask.
Does managing a well-established website such as yours require a large amount of work?
I’m completely new to writing a blog however I do write in my journal everyday.

I’d like to start a blog so I can share my own experience and views online.
Please let me know if you have any recommendations or tips
for brand new aspiring blog owners. Thankyou!

  123. Hey there! This is kind of off topic but I need some help from an established blog.
Is it tough to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick.

I’m thinking about creating my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do
you have any tips or suggestions? Thank you

  124. I am not sure where you’re getting your info, but great topic.
I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more.
Thanks for excellent info I was looking for this information for my mission.

  125. An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a
time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.

There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them
much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar:
‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.

But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty
    – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very
stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright,
while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats
throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes
far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table
fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm
and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a
study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them
to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every
day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.

    One taste is never enough.

  146. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and
gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said « You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear. » She put
the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and
it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this
is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

  147. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something that I
