Shyamalan recently opened up about that film’s impact on his career in an interview with People.

‘At this point, there’s so many generations of people

Shyamalan, who was born in Mahé India but grew up in Penn

    1990s before The Sixth Sense.

That set off a string a big hits for the filmmaker that includes Unbreakable (2000),
Signs (2002) and The Village (2004), that ultimately ended with the
release of Lady In The Water (2006), which barely covered
    the $70 million budget.

His biggest box office success was with The Sixth Sense, grossing
$672.8 million while working with a $40 million budget 25 years ago.

To date, the film made $6.6 million on its first day, including
an estimated $2.2 million from the Thursday night previews.

  8. The bold, confident, free-thinking modern woman who may
soon occupy the White House is not named Kamala Harris.

In her new No.1 New York Times best-selling memoir, Melania Trump
shares a revealing look into her personal life and journey –
from a childhood in small-town Slovenia, to globetrotting pursuits as a young model, to her courtship
and marriage to one of the world’s most famous men.

She also corrects the record, challenges her critics and clarifies
her positions on a range of issues from abortion (she’s pro-choice) to
the inclusion of biological men in women’s sports (female athletes must always
    be ‘protected and respected’).

In fact, she sounds like many female voters grappling with the whiplash changes wrought by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s time in the White House.

The bold, confident, free-thinking modern woman who may soon occupy the
White House is not named Kamala Harris. (Pictured: Kellyanne with Donald and Melania Trump at the White
    House in 2019).

‘The country is suffering,’ she writes. ‘We have wars around the world…

The border is open and dangerous… a lot of fentanyl is coming over and killing our youth….
The economy is really not great, inflation is high.’

I’ve known and worked alongside Melania for many years, and regard her as
    a friend.

She has been unfairly maligned and the target of so much
speculation and prevarication. That is why it has been so
wonderful to see her own ‘October Surprise’,
a memoir in her own words on her own timeline, showing the measured,
magnanimous woman tens of millions of Americans adore.

Earlier this year, Melania and I lost our mothers just weeks apart.
Even as she navigated her loss in public view, Melania made every
effort to be there for me. She and President Trump called, sent flowers,
handwritten notes and checked in with me time and again.

After my divorce was finalized last year, Melania showed up again, supporting me as any caring friend would and encouraging me to swing
open soldered doors following a time of personal upheaval and transition.

    EXCLUSIVE

KELLYANNE CONWAY: Don’s back! Here’s his new 2024 blueprint

And it was the same story when we worked together in the White House.
While Jill Biden has insisted on being called ‘Doctor’, Melania
was admired and beloved by the political and permanent staffers alike, asking after their children by name, welcoming them to events big
and small, and treating them with inclusivity and respect.

Known as a protective and present mother, Melania now uses her memoir to call out the ‘sheer malice’ of unfunny comic Rosie O’Donnell who, in 2016, tweeted
despicable and totally unfounded claims about Barron, then aged 10.

It was just weeks after Trump had stunned the world and won, and the same liberal media and Hollywood types,
who perpetuated every vicious attack against him,
reveled as O’Donnell’s vile lie wormed its way across social media.

It was a shock to see such naked cruelty towards a First
Child, especially when so many of us had treated Chelsea Clinton and the Obama
daughters like Fabergé eggs. Kids (including mine) should always be off limits.

I’ve known and worked alongside Melania for many years, and regard her
as a friend. (Pictured together in 2018 visiting Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
    Medical Center).

Earlier this year, Melania and I lost our mothers
just weeks apart. Even as she navigated her loss in public
view, Melania made every effort to be there for me.
She and President Trump called, sent flowers, handwritten notes and checked in with me time and again. (Pictured:
Together with Trump in the White House in 2019).

But instead of going to war, Melania acted swiftly and tenderly to
shield her son. She channeled maternal outrage into a first lady’s focus on initiatives centered around children’s wellness and cyberbullying
awareness. Her ‘Be Best’ campaign remains a highlight of her time in office.

Melania has never been one for preening and posturing.
Other first ladies used their roles to land on the cover of fashion magazines, but
she did so on her own, years before, as a
    successful model.

Even when I’ve suggested she push back on myriad false claims made by the media or ungrateful former staffers who have
returned her trust in them with self-serving lies and
revisionist history, she has declined, knowing that her silence is
    always more powerful.

Behind closed doors, Trump has, for decades, regarded his wife as a top confidante and counselor.

Whether as an international business mogul, a TV star or, lately, leader of the free world, it is Melania’s opinion that he has consistently sought.

Trump enjoys the company of plenty of friends, taking a range of advice, but he
speaks of – and to – Melania in an entirely unique way.
Really, he fears yet reveres her. He respects her independence,
seeks her input, trusts her keen eye, sharp ear and sense of people.

I have witnessed their relationship up close, and it is one fundamentally
built on mutual love and respect. Recently,
as Barron was heading off for college and Melania was preparing to publish her memoir, I jokingly asked Trump how it might feel to be the
second most popular man and the second most prominent author in the household.
    He chuckled and relented.

Melania Trump has plenty to say and nothing to prove.
She is not a typical political spouse rushing to the cameras on matters that are
best handled privately, or loudly offering insights or slights about her
husband’s political opponents à la Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.

She is an asset, a partner, an equal who is neither trying
to control – looking at you, Jill Biden – nor controlled by her partner.

She is what many feminists insist they are:
independent, a product of her own choices, comfortable in her own skin.

She has been by Trump’s side the entire time. Though never in his shadow.
In fact, from that very first moment they descended the golden escalator, she’s been leading the way.

  10. The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals
were done in private luxury first exploded into the public
    eye back in 2007.

Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of
dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges
    was relatively unknown.

It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had even started,
when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget
    airline, Jetstar.

And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next
year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.

The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide
that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat.

The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t
about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were
certainly both members during their terms as PM.

But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s
Lounge member – revealed a politically charged remark made within the club’s
hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.

The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government –
did not deter his party from romping in on election day.

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his
ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (above) has been a well-kept secret for years, but
it exploded into the public conscience in 2007 as the result
    of a political furore

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002
during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about
    the VIP club

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark,
Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge
is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the
    crowded normal Qantas Club.

‘As its name implies, the people given access
to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.

    ‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter
Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only
witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people
are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a
private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

Back in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) was boss of the comparatively lowly budget
airline Jetstar, and then Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon (right)
had the power over who made the cut to the Chairman’s Lounge

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians such as PM Anthony Albanese and the former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce (above) as ‘alarmingly cosy’

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of
its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from the
hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the
    time.

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,
‘ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas
CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the
    club’s hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that
you have to be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine
    newspapers reported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega
rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.

‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive
    club have included Pauline Hanson.

‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a
prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the
former HIH insurance executive jailed for
eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

Membership of the elite lounge is confined to about 6000 Australians including politicians from both
sides, senior public servants, TV stars and actors

The ‘scandal’ currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership
and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring
down the prime minister (above the PM with partner Jodie Haydon and ex-Qantas CEO
    Alan Joyce)

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which
most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary
interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of
Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s
spokesperson  told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and
    it is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only
lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level
of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which
    has stirred up the controversy.

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the
Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to
    the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary
    interest statements.

At a press conference this week, he repeated
that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.
    What’s appropriate is transparency.’

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12
    assistant ministers.

PM Anthony Albanese and every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and
all 12 assistant ministers are members of the exclusive Chairman’s Lounge

Entry to the country’s six opulent VIP clubs are suitably discreet, but once inside,
the designer lounges offer free à la carte fine dining, table service and
a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants

On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader David Littleproud
and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians
who have disclosed they have taken up free membership to
    the contentious club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member and so is Teal MP, Zali
    Steggall.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina
Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class
flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.

Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge
    is still veiled in secrecy.

The new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former
Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston (above) has stirred up
    the controversy

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe
Longo are members despite regulating the airline

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney,
Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are
    suitably discreet.

Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious, with free à la carte
fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army
    of dedicated lounge attendants.

Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the ‘Beyond’
    lounge.

Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the
    wake of the furore.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South
Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star turned
ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.

Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre
for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers
    to follow suit.

‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,
    ‘ he said.

‘You’re taking public money for the job and
you are supposed to represent the public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting
    for a plane?’

  12. Joker: Folie À Deux — starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix — has
garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book
movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially
released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but it only raked in $20 million at
the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the
lowest score for a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received
terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

Joker: Folie À Deux – starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix – has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombs
at the box office on opening night

It received a D rating on CinemaScore – the lowest score for a comic book movie

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic
    score of 32%.

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Joker: Folie À Deux is branded ‘bleak’ and the ‘most disappointing follow-up’ by critics

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but
the number has since drastically dropped.

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and
eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million.
However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux
    to around $200 million.

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck)
    – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for
    Best Original Score.

The sequel also screened during the Venice
International Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score
    of 32%

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions on the sequel, which features musical sequences.

One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this. what happened to the script?’ while another added, ‘is it that bad,’ followed by a crying face
    emoji.

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well,
could have been a good choice. It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed.

‘But with some original songs, that keep everything vague,
not just covers. Also when I heard of the ending I snorted fr.’

A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t
    a musical.’

‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and decided to randomly add musical scenes to fill the runtime,’ one penned.

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another shared, along with a monkey staring
    out a window.

One fan said, ‘the movie sucks. i had to walk out of the cinema,’ while another penned, ‘After years of disagreement….*Joker 2 releases* Critics
    [shaking hands] Audience.’

The sequel is projected to only rake in less that $50 million in the domestic
box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter

However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions over the sequel, which was also a musical

‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.

‘Joker downfall really needs to be studied,’ another shared, along with a
    monkey staring out a window

‘That’s way below what we expected,’ one wrote in regards to the current Rotten Tomatoes
scores. ‘People are saying this is the worst sequel ever.’

A fan explained, ‘yea this film was bad. it was pretentious and dull.
has the aesthetic of an arthouse film without the substance.’

‘It also insults the audience’s intelligence.
the songs were also underwhelming too. they shouldn’t have let this escape to theaters.’

One shared, ‘The audience that loved the first
movie is not the same audience running to see musicals. This was a
    gigantic mistake from step 1.’

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s character.

‘It’s not really where this movie is headed for me.
I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.’

Ahead of the movie’s release, Lady Gaga also dropped an accompanying
album titled Harlequin on September 27.

Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the film following its
    release on Friday.

‘That’s way below what we expected,’ one wrote in regards to the current Rotten Tomatoes scores.

‘People are saying this is the worst sequel ever’

A fan explained, ‘yea this film was bad. it was pretentious and dull.

has the aesthetic of an arthouse film without the substance’

The ‘bleak’ sequel, has also received a tepid
reception from fans, with some claiming Lady Gaga’s career could be at
    risk.

While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the hot seat, critics have
said the sequel is just a ‘repeat’ of the first hit but with an added musical twist.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie
and claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live up to expectations,
others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said
    it lacked any thrill.

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered
as one of the most subversive and original films of
the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel
is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars
but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump
the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea
    what to do with her.

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves
    ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,
Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a third
Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s character; Phillips,
Gaga and Phoenix seen in September in L.A.

Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing
follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics, as they cast
    doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the film following its release on Friday;
    seen in September in London

The Times’ Kevin Maher wrote: ‘The director Todd Phillips said there would be no follow-up to the original, but he changed his mind and the result
    is a derivative musical’

‘This might be the most disappointing follow-up to an Oscar-winning performance since Anthony Hopkins reworked his silky and terrifying
Dr Lecter from for the campy, kitschy.’

Along with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

Joker: Folie à Deux has faced additional backlash from
fans as they have claimed that Gaga is running the risk of losing her acting career.

  13. Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the
views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United
    States.

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan
complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at
the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have
to bring a non-party-line series of points to
    the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties
re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely
dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties,
but these receive vanishingly few votes
    in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

The Oscar-winning actor (pictured ) made the observation in response to podcast host Joe Rogan who complained that Americans were ‘completely
    trapped in the two-party system’

Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media figures
    in the world

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party
campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take
five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond,
in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist
platform but with only a million votes.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the
ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president
in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992
but gained no electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate –
carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the
    Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now
have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent to
achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott
in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but
are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the
    centre-right Liberal Party on economics.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime
minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.

She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the
lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative
independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired
in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding
    to some teal candidates.

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

Maverick independent Bob Katter has just celebrated 50
years in parliament (pictured: being congratulated by prime minister Anthony Albanese)

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor
frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of Fowler.

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years
in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland
state MP before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland
    electorate of Kennedy.

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a
bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the
Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house
    – the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

  19. Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares,
    food, and electronics.

The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the
    country.

Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that
works to provide support and assistance to people in need.

Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.

Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros.

Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes
from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations.

Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes,
printers, and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops.

There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and
another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas – or until stock runs out.

Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros

A new store will open in Richmond at Dimmey’s on 7 November.

The themed Richmond location will focus on goods for Christmas, summer, and the holiday season –
but it will also include household items, Bric-à-brac, and
    electrical items.

Shoppers have shared their thoughts on the pop-up
    locations online.

‘They have all the trending products – it’s so awesome,’ one said.

‘I bought a hair dryer from Vinnies and I’m obsessed with it,’ another wrote.

‘I always have such good luck at Vinnies, I have to go,’ a woman added.

For those interested in the finer things, shoppers have discovered
a ‘hidden gem’ discount retailer where you can find designer buys from brands like Fendi, Dior,
    and Aje for affordable prices.

TK Maxx – which has stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia – is the answer to buying new clothes and shoes on a budget.

TK Maxx has stores in New South Wales , Victoria, Queensland and
    South Australia

Beth Zazlan, from Queensland, recently found a gold mine of clothing lines from Australian brands like Camilla and
Marc, Acler, Bec+Bridge, Shona Joy, Dion Lee, Zimmerman,
    and Acler.

‘I was there for a pillow but I ended up grabbing some sparkly earrings from [American jewellery brand] Badgley Mischka,’ Beth told FEMAIL.

TK Maxx sells old stock from previous seasons – and shoppers have described it as a ‘clearance treasure hunt’.

Many have seen bags from Fendi, Dior, and Bottega Venetta on sale.

Others have spotted Gucci and Versace sunglasses,
Hugo Boss accessories, and Christopher Esber dresses.

Beth said, ‘I was truly blown away – so if you’re looking for a bargain,
    head there.’

A David Jones employee revealed in a comment that discounted items from
stores that aren’t sold are shipped to TK Maxx.

For the star-studded affair located at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Rooney,
39, joined her dashing husband Joaquin, 49.

The couple – who ‘secretly wed’ recently – looked happier than ever as they posed for sweet snaps on the carpet.

Rooney looked out of this world as she slipped into a floral sheer dress and flashed her underwear underneath.

The glitzy gala had no shortage of A-list star power as they were also joined by the likes of supermodel Kendall Jenner as well as fan-favorite actress and newly minted billionaire Selena Gomez.

Joaquin Phoenix’s, 49, wife Rooney Mara, 39, blushed as he fixed her dress
on the red carpet at Academy Museum Gala in LA on Saturday

Rooney and Joaquin shared a sweet red carpet moment

Joaquin just confirmed Rooney (born Patricia) was
his ‘wife’ during an episode of Sam Fragaso’s podcast Talk Easy, last month.

Mara welcomed their second child in June, and she dressed her post-baby body gorgeous
    sheer gown.

Phoenix (born Bottom) and the two-time Oscar nominee are also parents of four-year-old son River Mara Phoenix named after Joaquin’s
big brother who died, age 23, from an overdose of morphine and cocaine on Halloween 1993.

‘I love it. I love it so much. I think it’s the best
thing in the world,’ Rooney gushed of motherhood on the LaunchLeft Podcast last year.

    ‘It doesn’t feel like a two-actor house because I didn’t work
for the first three and a half years we were together.

Basically since we’ve been together, I only worked one or two times and one was really small and short.
It feels like a creative household, we’re constantly
    talking about creative things.’

The Phoenixes originally met in 2012 playing lovers Theodore Twombly and Catherine Klausen on the
LA set of Spike Jonze’s AI rom-com Her, but they didn’t start dating until after her 2016 split from
    her Discovery director Charlie McDowell.

The acting couple went on to co-star in Garth Davis’ 2018 Biblical drama Mary Magdalene and Gus Van Sant’s 2018 comedy Don’t
Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.

Deadline projected the 138-minute demented jukebox musical to

Audacious, different, bold and brilliant! Joker: Folie a
Deux is a punchline five years in the making, and
boy is it worth the wait, writes BRIAN VINER

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening of
Joker at the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly remember reeling out of
a morning screening, dazzled less by the unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the movie we’d just been shown.

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening of Joker
at the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly remember reeling out
of a morning screening, dazzled less by the
unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the movie we’d just been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel, Joker:
Folie a Deux The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must
call the love interest, although that would undervalue her
    wonderful performance.

The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying,
but bold and brilliant all the same.

It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a Joker animation in the style of a Tom &
Jerry cartoon, to show that since the events of the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter ego has become a cultural phenomenon in Gotham City.

There has even been a TV movie about him.

Joaquin Phoenix is once more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we
must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance

The film is audaciously different in style from the original,
not quite as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same

Joker: Folie a Deux is released on October 4, 2024 and will
premiere at the 81st annual Venice Film Festival

But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged
sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying
his celebrity status both with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose,
to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear
that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’,
    not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which delves even deeper than the original into schizophrenia
and other types of mental illness.

It’s been said that Folie a Deux is a musical. It’s not, but music
looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.

It is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The
Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets
    fire to their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which
way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by
    wheeling off in another direction.

The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving
her interpretation of lovely old Burt Bacharach and even Motown numbers, and Phoenix more than holding his own. There are also a couple
of swooning dance routines that make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma
    Stone in La La Land.

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug
interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of
    multiple personality disorder.

Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?

His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants
to make clear it is Arthur; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as Joker.

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming
    Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn

For those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just
another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should
    maybe think again

All this is compellingly directed by Phillips, and superbly acted by Phoenix especially,
in a role for which he seems custom-made, but by Gaga too.
We’ve known since A Star is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinians.

As for those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be
just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think again.

This might not quite be in the top rank of films about mental illness, alongside all-time
greats such as Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
But it’s not too far off.

Joker: Folie a Deux opens in the UK on October 4,
    2024.

  24. An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once
upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked
potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu,
but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is
    ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades
back. And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed
into the brilliant Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day.

Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.

But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were
    opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit
near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man.
The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a
loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather
communicate entirely via camera phone. Pose,
click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought
to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst
into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with
butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.

A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

    About £200 per head. Caviar Kaspia, 1a Chesterfield Street, London W1;

  26. March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris
International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment
in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia
in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of
several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks,
heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as
well as related investment of $150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations
    in the country.

Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer
its Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.
